White Fringetree Chionanthus virginicus is a small (25′ X 15′) deciduous tree that occurs widely in Louisiana. An attractive landscaping feature is its fragrant panicles of fringe-like, white flowers produced March – April. This species is dioecious; male flowers are showier than those of females. White Fringetree flowers best on sunny sites, but prefers some protection from the hot afternoon sun. Small blue fruits are produced in late Summer.
White Fringetree is tolerant of most soil types. It produces pollen, nectar, and fruit for butterflies, other native insects, and birds. White Fringetree makes a stunning specimen tree for the residential landscape.
