Little Bluestem Schizachyrium scoparium is a native perennial, bunch grass (6’) with green to blue-green foliage. It occurs naturally across the U.S. and southern Canada. Little Bluestem is found across Louisiana, with the exception of the southeastern parishes, in prairies, meadows, savannas, open woods and the edge of woodlands, and in pastures and old fields. Attractive landscaping characteristics of Little Bluestem include, Spring blue-green leaf color turning bronze, orange, or reddish in the Fall, silver seed heads that glisten in afternoon sunlight, and an appealing upright growth form that persists through Winter.
Use Little Bluestem on sites with full sun and dry soils as a striking vertical accent or mass planting for wildlife gardens, prairies, or meadows. It also can be used to control soil erosion on steep slopes with poor soils.
