Dwarf Witchalder Fothergilla gardenii is a small (6’ X 6’) deciduous, perennial shrub of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain that occurs naturally on sunny, high ground in swamps and adjacent moist, grassy sites from Mississippi to North Carolina. It blooms March to May with showy white flowers. Use Dwarf Witchalder in a woodland garden of native azaleas and evergreen ferns. It thrives in moist, acidic soils on sunny to partly shady sites, but this species provides its best displays of spring flowers and fall foliage color on sunny sites.
