Buffalograss

Bouteloua dactyloides

Buffalograss Bouteloua dactyloides is a 6” – 12” tall, blue-green or gray-green warm-season, perennial grass, which spreads by rhizomes. It is semi-evergreen, suitable for lawn use, drought tolerant (survives on as little as 1.5” of monthly rainfall), and its seed is widely available for purchase.

Buffalograss grows best in well-drained, clay-loam soils, but does not do well in sandy soils. Its leaves serve as winter browse for mammals. Birds use its seeds for food and leaves as nesting material. It is the larval host for the Green Skipper butterfly.
