Red Mulberry Morus rubra is a deciduous, medium size (50’ – 65’ X 30’) tree that occurs in upland woods, floodplains, and along stream banks throughout Louisiana. Leaves are 3” – 9” long, rough above and fuzzy below. It flowers March – June, and the black fruit ripens May – June. This plant performs best in full sun, but it is not particular about soil type or moisture condition.
Red Mulberry is a must for gardeners who want to attract spring migrating birds. It’s fruit is a favorite of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager, Northern Oriole, and dozens of other birds. It is a host plant for caterpillars of the Mourning Cloak butterfly.
